Application development or system integration?

Do you enjoy exploring information technology in your free time, writing your own code or perhaps helping friends configure their computers? If you do, you have just the right qualifications for a training apprenticeship as an IT Specialist. 

Developing innovative security technology is only possible with the help of experts in application development. We’ll teach you software programming using the very latest technology, which we develop and test in-house. You’ll be working on fingerprint scanners, facial recognition and thermal imaging cameras, as well as unique data sets from biometric measurement processes. Prepare yourself for a steep learning curve, alongside experienced colleagues and with exciting tasks in international projects ahead.

Alternatively, you can opt to ensure that our company remains at the forefront of biometrics in the specialist field of system integration. You’ll be responsible for integrating hardware and software into our IT infrastructure, for supporting our teams when it comes to troubleshooting with your IT expertise, and for learning what it means to be an “admin”. In the process, you will monitor and optimise our running IT systems. A role that comes with a great deal of responsibility and a wide range of tasks.

What will you do as an IT specialist in application development?

You’ll be involved in writing the code that makes our biometric devices work. Your programmes will ensure that our research results and data can be applied in practice. Later on, your user interfaces will be used by government officials, agencies and people in many different parts of the world. You’ll manage vast amounts of data and be responsible for automated data processing and the digital representation of biometric characteristics. Of course, coding also involves testing the software and making sure it stays compatible with the required operating systems. You’ll then write documentations for your software, and create or install software packages. And you’ll also initiate projects of your own. As you can already tell, your training program at DERMALOG will be anything but boring.

Here’s what you’ll learn in the IT specialist program for application technology.

At our company you’ll learn to program using various programming languages, above all Java, Python and C++. Once you’ve completed your training, you’ll have a strong chance of going on to become a full-stack developer. That means you’ll have the opportunity to build your expertise in both frontend and backend development. Writing and modifying software will become easier and easier for you. You’ll learn how to manage databases professionally and how to set up different programmes to interact with one another. The combination of your tech stack with the biometric tools available to you are unique in the IT industry.

What will you do as an IT specialist in system integration?

Laptops, printers, projectors, network cables – these and other devices have all become indispensable for our day-to-day work. The digitalisation of the business world means that we can now all access our data at any time and take care of the majority of our work on a computer. We therefore need people who design and maintain IT systems and make them accessible to users. And these people are IT specialists in the field of system integration. They install digital infrastructures in companies, make sure that networks are working, and either advise or train employees. They are computer experts and network architects in the truest sense.

Here’s what you’ll learn while training as an IT specialist for system integration

An icon pops up in our email programme indicating that a new ticket has come in. For IT specialists in system integration, this is often happening all day long. Our teams can report IT problems using a ticket system, which you’re then assigned to take care of and resolve. But that’s not all: you’re also responsible for designing and setting up networks, and setting up computer workstations. You’ll also train your colleagues to work with new software releases or about general subjects relating to digitalisation. You’ll know you’ve done a good job whenever everything is running along smoothly from a technical point of view. In addition to internal IT, you’ll also be involved in working on databases, quality assurance, deployment and support. A variety of different tasks and fields await you!

Which school subjects are most important?

  • Mathematics: You’ll have a lot to do with numbers in your day-to-day work. If you’ve paid close attention and applied yourself in this subject, you should be able to cope with most of what’s required of you.
  • Computer Science: This subject was offered at your school and you got good to very good grades? Great! That means you can keep building on what you’ve already learned. The more insights and knowledge you already have about computers and IT systems, the better.
  • English: The world is becoming more and more interconnected, and English has become the standard mode of communication, especially in the world of IT. So if you can express yourself well in this language, you’ll be able to communicate with partner and customer companies as well as suppliers all around the globe.

You’re calm and composed, and have a particularly long attention span. The code you create or the network you connect to won’t always turn out to work properly. Sometimes your own work was exactly right and the error is down to some other external factor. You can’t let such situations get to you.

You should always keep your priorities at the top of your mind, even if they’ve sometimes been set by a higher authority. You should always be able to judge for yourself, though, which of your tasks you need to focus on the most. But don’t worry: You’ll often have the freedom to divide your working time up among several different tasks, especially during training.
